You can divide roles and services by the server’s function (for example, Experience Management or Experience Platform) or the server’s architecture (for example, core roles or services).

The Sitecore CMS application contains the following core server roles:
You can combine all of the core roles on one standalone server, or run each one on a separate, dedicated instance for better performance.

The following XP services run as web API apps on IIS:

- xConnect Search
- Reference data
- Marketing Automation Reporting
- Marketing Automation Operations
The following XP services run either as Windows services (if Sitecore is installed on premise) or web jobs (if you are using Azure):
